Stratified Substrates Can Reduce Peat Use and Improve Root Productivity in Container Crop Production

چکیده
Peat use in horticulture continues to be scrutinized as consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental sustainability concerns associated with peat. Thus, horticultural industry is driven search for peat alternatives. Substrate stratification (i.e., vertical layering unique media atop another a singular container) has been studied nursery substrates and demonstrated improved resource efficiency regard water fertilizer inputs. However, minimal research evaluated using concept stratified an attempt reduce inputs greenhouse production. Hence, objective this study was identify if stratifying costly floriculture low-cost pine bark can use, reliance, cost within industry. A crop, Petunia hybrid ‘Supertunia Honey’, grown two distinct substrate treatments: 1) nonstratified (commercial peat-based substrate) 2) layered aged (1:1 by volume) under different irrigation schedules. Crop growth evaluated, including indices, shoot physiological responses, root measurements. hydraulic properties such matric potential volumetric content were monitored over time. The results that petunia crop produced systems yield similarly sized quality crops traditionally plants. Furthermore, substrate-produced had productivity, yet less bloom, when compared nonstratified-grown crops.

Optimal crop management can reduce energy use and greenhouse gases emissions in rainfed canola production
Energy use and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in rainfed canola production in north eastern Iran were analyzed to find measures to reduce energy use and GHG emissions. Four production scenarios, i.e. a high-input, a low-input, a better crop management and a usual scenario, evaluated. All activities and production processes were monitored and recorded over three consecutive years. The usua...

Root and rhizosphere research has been conducted for many decades, but the underlying strategy of root/rhizosphere processes and management in intensive cropping systems remain largely to be determined. Improved grain production to meet the food demand of an increasing population has been highly dependent on chemical fertilizer input based on the traditionally assumed notion of 'high input, hig...

While governments and individuals strive to maintain the availability of high-quality water resources, many factors can "change the landscape" of water availability and quality, including drought, climate change, saltwater intrusion, aquifer depletion, population increases, and policy changes. Specialty crop producers, including nursery and greenhouse container operations, rely heavily on avail...
